Can you change a turtleneck?

Stunner of a silk sweater. Perfect color. Love the little sleeves. Beads on one shoulder.

But turtleneck?!

I’m wondering if it’s possible, without wrecking the sweater, to turn the turtleneck into a crew neck or jewel neck.

Because this beauty’s going to waste as is…

Could I stay-stitch the neckline I want, then gently and invisibly bind it?

The scoop neck came out great.

The only think I don’t love is the buttons.

Will give them a run, maybe change them out after wearing.

Sewed right on, about 3/8 inch from the edge, with a little zigzag.

Changing turtleneck sweater dress into…

Love the color, texture, fuzz on this thrifted lamsbwool sweaterdress. I’m a fan of the shoulder buttons that open and close it, too.

But it’s got a TURTLENECK (ugh). So I’m using my new favorite McCall’s 6164 to transform it…

Still needs bindings, etc, but it’s so close…

Bulky necks are no good.

Kept staring at this sweater. Color good, weight good, long length fantastic. Neck… holding us all back.

sweater cowl

Ten minutes tonight with the scissors and machine and the neck is gone.

I cut off the cowl, leaving about an inch all the way around. Wrapped the inch around to the back, pinned in place and zigzagged all around, being super careful not to stretch the neck out more. Trimmed as needed. Put away back in closet.

It worked! (Trust me.)
